IWU unable to host men's sectional tilts
Shirk Center booked with national indoor track meet

BLOOMINGTON -- Now that the Illinois Wesleyan basketball team has secured its spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament, speculation may begin on what path the Titans could encounter in postseason play.
One thing is for certain, however. That path will not include Shirk Center for possible sectional competition.
Shirk Center is the site for the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11 and 12, the same weekend four basketball sectionals will decide who advances to the basketball Final Four in Salem, Va.
With a 21-4 overall record heading into the NCAA Tournament and a more than adequate facility, IWU would be a strong candidate to host a sectional if the Titans advance that far.
"It's a situation that is out of my control," Wesleyan coach Scott Trost said. "Obviously, we would prefer to play at home in front of our great fans. But I'm sure we'll have great fan support if we go on the road. You've got to beat them wherever you have to play them."
IWU played host to the indoor meet in 2000 and was happy to oblige when asked to do it again, said athletic director Dennie Bridges. The basketball team did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament that season.
"We hosted it in 2000 successfully. With our facility, we're considered one of the prime spots to host it. I asked our track coach, Chris Schumacher, and Chris wanted to," Bridges said. "It was really a no brainer.
"The bottom line is our track athletes want the opportunity to participate in a home national meet, also. It's being a part of an athletic department that's more than one sport."
Bridges looked into having a basketball sectional at Redbird Arena or Horton Field House at Illinois State. But Redbird Arena will be holding the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tournament that weekend.
"The NCAA doesn't look real kindly on those kind of bids," Bridges said. "The NCAA prefers it to be an on-campus (Division III) facility."
